Newly crowned European champions Liverpool are reportedly plotting a summer move for Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

This is according to the publication from the stables of London Evening Standard which claimed that the Reds are looking for a backup goalkeeper to undisputed first choice shot-stopper Alisson Becker and they have identified the aforementioned McCarthy as the man for the job.

Liverpool splashed a world-record transfer fee, to sign Alisson Becker from Italian Serie A giants AS Roma last summer and the Brazilian international star is expected to be the first choice goalkeeper at Anfield for many years to come.

The Reds paid £67m to sign him from the Romans but that transfer fee record lasted for just some days before Chelsea activated the £71m clause in the then Athletic Bilbao contract of their goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga who now hold the record.

Spanish international Kepa is the world’s most expensive goalkeeper at the moment.

Belgian national team shot stopper Simon Mignolet was the backup goalkeeper to Alisson Becker throughout the just concluded season but the former Sunderland man is expected to leave Liverpool this summer in search of more first team opportunities and Alex McCarthy could be his replacement.

Southampton goalkeeper McCarthy is keen on the move to Liverpool.
