Eastern Conference 2026: Knicks Are New Favorites

The New York Knicks are suddenly the betting favorites to win the 2026 Eastern Conference, a terrifying development for anxious fans. Can they finally break the curse?

NBA playoffs 2026: New York Knicks are new favorites to win the Eastern Conference

Okay, deep breaths, everyone. Just… deep, cleansing breaths. My editor just shoved a memo under my door, practically vibrating with what they called “breaking news.” Apparently, the New York Knicks, *our* New York Knicks, are now the undisputed, top-of-the-pile, odds-on favorites to win the Eastern Conference in the 2026 NBA playoffs. My heart just did a triple somersault and then tried to hide behind my liver.

Favorites? The Knicks? Do they know what that means? Do they understand the sheer, unadulterated, soul-crushing weight of expectation that comes with such a pronouncement? It’s like painting a giant target on their backs and handing out free darts to every other team in the East. Boston, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, whoever else has miraculously assembled a super team since last week – they’re all circling like vultures, I can feel it.

Why are we doing this to ourselves?

I get it, theoretically. After a remarkably consistent 2024-25 season that saw them cement their gritty identity, and then a savvy offseason that brought in a couple of key, high-IQ veterans without sacrificing the core (Brunson, Randle, and hopefully still a defensive anchor like Anunoby if he’s around), the metrics look good. The player development has been fantastic, the bench is deep, and the team chemistry seems almost… unsettlingly stable. We’ve seen them grind out wins, defy alot of doubters, and even pull off some unexpected upsets in the earlier playoff rounds. On paper, it makes sense. That’s the problem, isn’t it?

Because paper burns. And usually, when it comes to the Knicks, it burns spectacularly and takes our hopes and dreams with it. I’ve lived through too many “promising” seasons, too many “this is our year” pronouncements that ended in utter heartbreak, often at the hands of some rogue three-pointer or a completely inexplicable turnover in crunch time. My therapist charges extra just for Knicks-related sessions, I swear. It’s going to be a long playoff run, filled with anxiety. How can anyone even look at the live scores and odds without feeling a knot in their stomach?

The legendary Yogi Berra once said, “It ain’t over ’til it’s over.” And for the Knicks, being the favorite before a single playoff game has been played feels less like a prophecy and more like a cruel setup. What if someone gets injured? What if the officiating mysteriously swings against us? What if the basketball gods, who have seemingly enjoyed tormenting Knicks fans for decades, simply decide this newfound favoritism is too much and smite us with a cursed bounce? I’m not ready for this. I don’t think any true Knicks fan is. Pass me the paper bag, I think I’m hyperventilating again.

I'm known as 234sport’s most anxious and overly opinionated, satirical sports columnist. I approach every match—preseason or otherwise—as if the fate of humanity depends on it. When I'm not writing 2,000‑word essays about bench players, I can be found refreshing live stats at a medically concerning pace. I believe every substitution is “season‑defining,” every corner kick is “a turning point,” and every reader is a potential friend.
