The Reds tackle Paris St-German on Wednesday in a must-win affair as they needed the maximum points to progress to the knockout stages of the competition.
The Reds played a wonderful 3-0 victory against Watford last night but they now need to win against the highly rated and star-studded Ligue 1 side.
There were questions over the fitness level of England’s and Liverpool’s regular starter Joe Gomez as he wasn’t in the starting lineup at the Vicarage road yesterday.
When asked if the young defender will be fully fit ahead of the Champion’s League clash, Klopp revealed that Gomez picked up a little knock on Saturday but he should recover on time to face the Ligue 1 Champions.
However, in Gomez’s place, the German manager gave a rare start to experienced Croatian centre-back Dejan Lovren who was lively throughout the game.
The 28-year-old was awesome at the back as he prevented Watford’s strikers from being constant trouble to Allison Becker.
His understanding with Van Dijk throughout the game was second to none and that has ultimately passed a message to Klopp that he’s more than willing to take his place back in the team.
Klopp’s selection headache
Klopp’s trust in Gomez’s ability is never in doubt and the player has been able to justify his manager’s trust.
Neymar and Mbappe are reportedly set to return to training on Monday following their respective injuries, hence, Jurgen Klopp can’t afford to joke with his lineup – especially at the back – if he must stop both world-class strikers from scoring.
However, considering the importance of the upcoming clash against PSG, it remains unknown if Klopp will be going with an unfit youngster.
Who should Klopp start alongside Van Dijk at the heart of the defence on Wednesday?
Joe Gomez
Apart from yesterday’s clash, the youngster has started and completed all the League matches played so far this season.
His partnership with
With yesterday’s his partnership with the former Southampton man continues to blossom match after match.
He has featured and performed brilliantly against top players while in action for the Three Lions, hence, dealing with Neymar and Mbappe’s threats won’t be an impossible mission.
Over his fitness level, the manager has publicly revealed the youngster will be back in perfect condition and in contention for a place in the starting XI.
Dejan Lovren
The Croatian is back to his great form after a lengthy injury, though, his place in the team has already been taken.
With his display against the Hornets yesterday, he stands a chance of regaining his place against PSG on Wednesday.
His experience is definitely going to count when both teams tackle each other.
He already understood playing alongside Van Dijk, therefore, Klopp need not to worry if both players would perform as a collecting unit.
As it stands, no one can predict who will start against PSG as both players have equal chances of appearing from the blast of the referee’s whistle.
