Five-time European champions Real Madrid have reportedly held talks over the signing of Ajax Amsterdam defender Matthijs De Ligt.
This is according to well respected journalist Guillem Balague.
The Spanish media practitioner spoke about the young Ajax Amsterdam skipper while he was on BBC Radio 5 Live as he said that the Reds are in the frame to sign him.
Liverpool will have to contend with other major European clubs in their quest to sign De Ligt.
Spanish champions Barcelona were thought to be the overwhelming favourites but the La Liga giants have found it difficult to negotiate a transfer successfully with the player’s agent, Mino Raiola.
Others interested include Italian champions Juventus and Paris Saint Germain (PSG).
Matthijs De Ligt has shown maturity beyond his years after leading Ajax Amsterdam to their first domestic double for over a decade.
He’s the youngest skipper in the history of Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam after being handed the armband at the age of 18.
De Ligt was instrumental to Ajax Amsterdam and their league triumph this season at the expense of rivals PSV Eindhoven.
Apart from the Dutch Eredivisie title, Ajax also won the Dutch Cup via the 4-0 defeat of fellow top flight side Willem II.
