Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk has won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year Award according to the publication from popular British media portal Daily Mail.
According to the report, Dutch international Van Dijk won the award ahead of Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling.
Both Van Dijk and Sterling were seen as front-runners for the award.
Virgil Van Dijk has been a defensive stalwart for Liverpool since he joined the club from fellow Premier League side Southampton at the start of last year.
The Saints received a world-record fee for a defender when they were paid £75m for Van Dijk thus making him the most expensive footballer in the history of world football.
He led the Reds to the Champions League final last season before they were beaten by Spanish club Real Madrid and he has been a key player for the Merseysiders in the Premier League title race this season.
Liverpool and Manchester City have been at loggerheads over who will win the Premier League title this season and the acquisition of Van Dijk has made that possible for the Reds who finished a long way off from the Citizens in the last campaign.
Van Dijk was nominated for the award alongside the aforementioned Sterling, Eden Hazard Of Chelsea, Sadio Mane of Liverpool and the Manchester City duo of Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero.
