Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has disclosed that he wants South coast club Southampton to win this season’s EFL Cup after his team was eliminated by the Saints.
Arsenal were convincingly beaten 2-0 by visitors Southampton at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday evening in a quarter-final clash as far as the competition is concerned with the latter booking a semi-final place for the first time in 30 years.
Arsene Wenger’s preference for who will win the competition among the remaining four semi-finalists namely Liverpool, Hull City, Southampton and Manchester United was made known by his protégé and current Southampton manager Claude Puel after he masterminded an impressive win over his boss.
Puel was a playing staff under Wenger for seven years at French club AS Monaco and when they were exchanging pleasantries at the end of Wednesday night’s clash, Wenger told the Southampton boss to go on and win the EFL Cup as confirmed by Puel, who said: “Arsene just told me to go on and win it.”
The instant reward for the straightforward win over Southampton is a semi-final clash over in-form Liverpool, who will expectedly start as favorites while Manchester United and Hull City will trade tackle with each other in the other semi-final.
