After an impressive victory against Turkey at Euro 2016 , Cesc Fabregas spoke at length about the influence of Spain coach Vicente del Bosque.
Highlighting his coach’s importance, the Chelsea player focussed on the creativity with which Del Bosque allows his players to perform.
“The coach transmits security and tranquillity,” the 29-year-old told reporters.
“You always go out on the pitch knowing what you have to do – he gives us that freedom on the field and you feel free to play your game.
“That’s very important at the moment especially for skilled players and Del Bosque is key.”
Fabregas has started both of Spain’s groups games, though there are those that are questioning his influence and place in the starting XI.
“I don’t care what people think about that, it motivates me,” he added. “I’m calm and what’s important is that we are playing well and winning, everything else means very very little to me.”
After an uninspiring World Cup in Brazil cast doubts over Spain’s pedigree, La Roja looked back to their best during their convincing 3-0 win over Turkey.
“We’ve started well, playing with freedom and defending very well,” Fabregas said of his team’s performances thus far, “My feeling is positive – some leaders have left but the youngsters are contributing a lot.
“There’s a lot of togetherness and on the pitch that means we play with more confidence.
“We have an important match against Croatia because winning the group is imperative – this has only just begun.”
Gathering men behind the ball has been a standout feature of Spain’s opponents so far, and Fabregas pinpoints Jordi Alba and Juanfran as important assets in breaking down stubborn defences.
“Sometimes it’s not fully considered but in every match we have to play against teams which have 11 men behind the ball,” he said. “The wing-backs are essential for our game, they break the lines and that’s fundamental.”
The Catalunya-born player also had a special mention for goalkeeper Iker Casillas, replaced in the starting XI for this tournament by his understudy David de Gea.
“[Casillas is] a person that is loved by everyone, not only for what he has done but for the way he is,” the Chelsea man said. “It’s very important to see your captain, a legend in Spanish football, know how to accept his role.
“He’s a role model for De Gea because he’s helping him a lot and we’re very happy with the way that Iker is presenting
