Manchester United Legend Rio Ferdinand has suggested that Merseyside giant Liverpool should try harder to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in the winter January transfer window.
Liverpool were strongly linked with an offer for the Dutch defender during the recently shut summer transfer window.
The Southampton defender was believed to be close to making a transfer to Anfield, but Liverpool were forced to withdraw their interest in the defender and issue a public apology after they were accused of alleged approaching the player illegally by the Saints.
The Dutchman submitted a transfer request, but the Saints refused to cash in on him before the summer transfer deadline.
It remains to be seen whether the Merseysiders will come back with a new attempt to try and sign the Dutchman in January.
But after the Reds conceded seven in their last two matches, Ex Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has suggested that Liverpool should make a new transfer move for the Netherlands international defender.
Ferdinand while speaking on BT Sport on Wednesday night said: “There needs to be a leader in there (in the team). That’s why he (Klopp) went (wanted to sign) so hard for Van Dijk.
“They (Liverpool) need more protection (defensive solidity) in there.”
The Reds return to English Premier League action on Saturday when they play host to Burnley at Anfield Stadium.
