Barcelona’s attempt to sign Philippe Coutinho was spurned after the Catalan club said Liverpool asked for about $237 million transfer fee.
Barcelona Chiefs spoke about the failed move on Saturday in a press briefing. Albert Soler – Club Director of professional sports, and technical secretary for football Robert Fernandez disclosed the monster cash demand for the Liverpool man and also the potential transfer fee for PSG’s Angel Di Maria.
Soler told reporters he could be here today unveiling two players that have cost the Catalan a whopping 270 million euros, as per Barcelona website.
He said it would have been irresponsible of the board if such transfer had materialized and that heads could have rolled at the club.
Soler said before the window closed this week, the reds placed a 200 million price tag on the Barcelona target.
However, Barcelona managed to agree to a move to Bundesliga giant Borussia Dortmund last month for striker Ousmane Dembéléa for a transfer fee of around $125 million.
That move was agreed after the club had sold Neymar to big spending Paris Saint-Germain.
Dembélé has scored 22 goals and made 25 assists in 78 matches since becoming professional.
Soler also revealed that French Ligue 1 powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain demanded about $83 million for Messi’s Argentine teammate Angel Di Maria.
