Chelsea and Arsenal legend Nicolas Anelka has slammed the current crop of players for having a weak mentality ahead of their clash against Liverpool at Anfield.
The Gunners have performed very low in recent weeks which has attracted criticism from fans, football pundits and even former players of the clubs. Anelka who also donned the red and white colors of Arsenal has now ripped into the weak mentality of the current players, while also highlighting the lack of leaders in the squad compared to his days at the club.
The Frenchman said: ‘Mentally, there’s something lacking,’
‘They’ve always had great players, but psychologically, there’s always something.
‘They never manage to hold out until the end. I think Wenger is doing a good job.
‘There comes a point where you can’t always criticise the manager. Wenger is good.
‘It’s the players who don’t have that must-win mentality.
‘In my day, there was Vieira, Petit, Dixon, Adams. Mentally they were ready. You knew you’d win. Now, you don’t get that.’
Anelka left the Gunners for Real Madrid in 2003 for a record deal, he arrived back to the Premier League with Chelsea before moving to a couple of less clubs in Europe.
Arsene Wenger has come under criticisms for his side’s performances in recent seasons and might eventually step down his position at the realms of affairs at the Emirates by the end of the current season
