One of the Chelsea stars linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer is Nemanja Matic. And surprisingly, Chelsea won’t mind selling him to a top domestic rival – Manchester United – despite interests from Juventus also.
And former Chelsea star Mario Melchiot thinks the Serbian star could come back and haunt the Blues if he joins Manchester United this summer.
Earlier this week, the Guardian said Matic would move to Old Trafford after a £40M deal was agreed by the two Premier League giants.
Premier League champions Chelsea will allow the defensive midfielder to leave for that price after securing the services of French star Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco for a reported £35m fee.
And speaking about the situation recently, former Blues defender Melchiot feels selling a player like Matic to a top rival could actually come back to haunt them.
“You don’t want to make your rivals stronger, especially in the midfield where Jose Mourinho is always focused on having a strong midfield.
“If he [Conte] makes the choice to let him go to Man United, he better gets a good backing because, if not, it might come back to haunt you later.” he said.
Jose Mourinho signed the Serb during his time as Chelsea boss back in 2014, and he oversaw the player’s transition into one of the Premier League’s most hardened midfielders.
