The Spanish goalkeeper has been an impressive figure for the Red Devils since he joined them in 2011 from Valencia. Real Madrid have been heavily linked with a move for De Gea in recent seasons, and even failed in their attempt to sign him, owing to a ‘fax machine’ controversy.
Reports in The Sun claim that Real Madrid have moved for De Gea and will table a £60million bid for him.
A Madrid source said: “De Gea is the top priority.
“We expect him to come this summer.”
However, United boss Jose Mourinho is reluctant to allow the 26-year-old leave the Old Trafford and had earlier recently told De Gea to concentrate on his game amid speculations about his future.
There were suggestions that Mourinho benched De Gea during their game against Sunderland, starting Sergio Romero ahead of him after the Spaniard confronted him for his public criticism of his performances in recent weeks.
If the transfer goes through, the fee will eclipse £32.7m paid for Gianluigi Buffon by Juventus in 2001.
It is understood that David De Gea will fancy a return to his home-country next summer despite been a key figure in Manchester United.
