Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne was the chief orchestrator as his team secured Premier League summit with a straightforward victory over Welsh side Cardiff City in their league clash at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.
De Buyne recently returned from injury for the weekend’s Premier League victory (2-0 win over Fulham).
The former Chelsea player had been out of action since the 1-0 away win over South Coast club Bournemouth in February.
Belgian international De Bruyne spent two largely frustrating years at Chelsea between 2012 and 2014 before joining German Bundesliga club VFL Wolfsburg where he spent one successful season.
He moved back to the Premier League in 2015 to sign for Manchester City for a then club-record transfer fee.
De Bruyne scored from an improbable angle to give Manchester City a sixth-minute lead against Cardiff City.
German international winger Leroy Sane wrapped up the win for the Citizens as early as the 44th minute to secure the three points at stake.
Manchester City were thwarted by the Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge in their bid to add to their goals in the second half.
The win lifted Manchester City above title rivals Liverpool and to the Premier League summit with six games left to go before the season ends.
