Manchester United supporters obviously were irritated by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s assessment of their ‘long ball tactics’ last weekend, and they sure didn’t forget it.
The German coach was critical of United boss Jose Mourinho’s strategy, particularly after he brought on Marouane Fellaini to be used as an auxiliary striker to nod down long balls.
Klopp, with his side trailing against Swansea City at Anfield on Saturday, chose to use the same tactics as he brought on Joel Matip in the dying stages to try to rescue something from the game.
Of course, this didn’t go unnoticed by United fans as they slated his hypocrisy on Twitter, pointing out that surely, certain situations dictate the need for the long ball as it can prove to be the most effective method.
While we can say it worked for Jose Mourinho and Man United, we can say it unfortunately didn’t work for Klopp and Liverpool on this occasion. The Reds slipped to a disappointing 3-2 home defeat to Swansea. The loss could damage their Premier League title hopes.
With title leader Chelsea yet to play this week, Liverpool are still seven points behind them. If Chelsea should win or get a draw, they will simply stretch their lead over the Reds further.
