JosManchester United boss Jose Mourinho has revealed he chose to drop David De Gea in their Europa clash against Anderlecht because he believed second keeper Sergio Romero should be given an opportunity.
The Argentine keeper has been picked ahead of De Gea for the second match in a row with reports that Mourinho was unhappy with the Spaniard due to a reported scuffle between the pair as a result of the Portuguese’s public criticisms of the 26-year-old performances.
The United boss has now claimed that he chose Romero of De Gea because he wanted continuity in his squad, he said: ‘Sergio is playing virtually every match in the Europa League and he deserves this continuity. The fact he played against Sunderland is good for him,
‘We have two very good goalkeepers and we have two young keepers behind them both so we are fine.’
Manchester United have not been too convincing in recent time due to their position in the Premier League, but Jose Mourinho will hope his men replicate their form in Europe in the League, as they appear to be the strong contenders for the Europa League title.
Speaking about their chances in Europe, Mourinho said: ‘That special feeling [about the Europa League] is because it’s the only competition we can win.
‘No chance to win Premier League. This competition is where we show our motivations and ambitions with seven other teams. To win it we need to beat three teams and Anderlecht is the first battle.
