Former Chelsea boss and current Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has stated that he has been surprised by Chelsea’s “defensive” approach this season under their new Italian manager Antonio Conte.
Chelsea sacked the Portuguese tactician last season few months after he helped won the premier league title in the previous season. Even while the management brought in an interim coach , they still couldn’t help but finished at the tenth position on the table and without a trophy.
Former Juventus manager Antonio Conte was however brought in as a permanent successor to Mourinho, and the former Italy coach has successfully made Chelsea the Premier League’s standout team this season so far.
The West London club are currently strong favourites to lift the trophy this season after successfully building a ten points lead at the top of the table.
Mourinho on his part was brought into Old Trafford by the Manchester United management and he is trying the best he could do.
His Manchester United side met with his former club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday night for their FA Cup quarter-final game. Chelsea were victors, thanks to a powerful strike by Frenchman N’Golo Kante in the second half of the game.
And when Mourinho was asked about his take on how the Stamford Bridge club have started the season by BBC Sport in the build-up to Monday’s game, he admitted that he has been quite surprised by his former club’s approach this season.
He noted that Chelsea is an amazing defensive team who are very good defensively and also have fantastic players to be a counter-attacking team to overwhelm opponents with three or four players.
Chelsea’s next game would be an away Premier League clash against Stoke City on Saturday afternoon.
