Chelsea striker Treated Badly – Batistuta

Former Argentine national team striker Gabriel Batistuta has leapt to the defence of Chelsea striker Gonzalo Higuain after he announced his retirement from international football.

Higuain ended his association with the Argentine national team on Thursday as he called out his critics to look for another player to pounce on.

The Chelsea striker has been heavily criticised over the years especially for his misses in front of goal in major tournaments like the FIFA World Cup and the COPA America.

In a recent interview monitored by Goal, Argentina legend Batistuta said that Higuain was treated badly by his country.

The former Fiorentina and AS Roma striker said that the Juventus loanee is well respected outside Argentina but same cannot be said in the South American nation.

Gonzalo Higuain has been taunted for years because of his misses in the finals of Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament, 2015 COPA America tournament and the 2016 COPA America Centenary tournament.

The 31-year-old scored 31 goals in 75 appearances for the Argentine national team during a nine-year spell from 2009 to 2018.

He has been overlooked on several occasions by the new Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni since his last appearance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia where Argentina crashed out in the first knockout stage.
