Gary Cahill — From hero to zero

Former England national team captain Gary Cahill began his football career at such a tender age as he was signed into Aston Villa’s Academy in 2000.

The young defender pass through thick and thin until he was professionally captured by the Villa Park outfits in 2004 but had to spend two seasons on loan to Burnley and Sheffield United respectively.

Despite showing what he’s capable of doing while playing for Burnley, Aston Villa didn’t really show any sign of trust in his quality as they sold him to Bolton Wanderers in 2008.

Having spent four years at the Reebok stadium, Cahill played 130 matches, scoring 13 goals in all competitions.

His impressive stats and performances caught the eyes of Roman Abrahamovic who didn’t hesitate to splash £7 million on his signature in 2012.

Since his move to Stamford Bridge, Cahill development and understanding of the game developed immensely, making him one of the most trusted centre-backs during Carlo Ancelotti, Rafa Benitez and Guus Hiddink’s time.

Cahill progress from being just a centre back to team captain due to the majestic way he coordinated his fellow defenders during matches.

His leadership on and off the field was appreciated by the England manager Hodgson who made him the country’s vice-captain behind Wayne Rooney.

However, things began to turn from good to bad for the 32-year-old defender towards the end of last season as Conte preferred starting Christensen at the heart of defence ahead of the veteran defender.

By the end of last season, Cahill could only manage just 27 appearances for the team, playing a bit part in their run to FA Cup glory.

Many thought Conte’s dismissal might help Cahill return to starting lineup but that wasn’t the case as former Napoli boss Maurizio wasn’t convinced by the player’s performance during the team’s pre-season.

The Italian manager has chosen to leave Cahill permanently on the substitute bench as he so much trust in the chemistry that exist between David Luiz and Christensen at the back of the pitch.

After 12 Premier League matches, the England international has featured in just one game and there is no assurance he will add to his lone cap anytime soon except there are injury concerns or lost of form.

Should Cahill move elsewhere in January?

With his current state under Maurizio Sarri, the only option left for Cahill is to find his way out of the West London club in January.

It doesn’t look like Sarri has any trust in his ability, therefore, there’s no point fighting for a place in the team.

He was linked with a move out of Chelsea during the summer window but Sarri blocked Galatasaray’s last-minute bid for his signature.

Despite his unfortunate situation at Stamford Bridge, Cahill still remain a quality defender who could be relied on at any time.

The former Aston Villa man must force a move out of Stamford Bridge in January if he must continue to remain one of the best defenders in the League
