Euro 2016: Courtois and Wilmots in heated argument after loss to Wales

The Red Devils were stunned by Wales, and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois did not hold back his disappointment after the game, blaming tactician Marc Wilmots for their elimination .

After Friday night’s shock 3-1 defeat to Wales , Belgium coach Marc Wilmots was involved in a heated dispute with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois

The Red Devils got off to a horrific start at Euro 2016 as they were fell to a 2-0 defeat to Italy , with Wilmots being

confronted by his shot-stopper in the aftermath of that defeat as well.

Although his contract runs until 2018, it appears to be increasingly unlikely that Wilmots will see it through.

In the aftermath of Friday’s defeat, there was a tense atmosphere in the dressing room in Lille, according to Belgian press.

Wilmots was heavily criticised by the Belgian players, and he even came to blows with Courtois, although the Chelsea goalkeeper chose to skirt over the issue in his post-match comments.

“It [the defeat] is the biggest disappointment of my career, even though I have played and lost a

Champions League final with Atletico Madrid,” Courtois said after the match.

“Wales had such good unity in their dressing room and I said what I felt like saying [to Wilmots],” he continued. “We started well, creating two or three opportunities, even scoring a goal.

“But we locked ourselves too much in our own half and we left too many spaces. The Welsh had more chances than us, they were even more dangerous.”

Courtois continued to indirectly criticise Wilmots.

“We have to be smart,” he said. “We’re young and we will have many years together, but we are disappointed because we had a good chance to reach the semi-final.”

Wilmots, however, responded by pouring water on Courtois’ comments.

“Courtois is frustrated because he had a difficult season at Chelsea and had hopes of becoming a European champion,” the 47-year-old claimed.

“Experience cannot be bought, I am not a magician,” Wilmots said after being asked about the youthfulness of the side.

Belgium entered Euro 2016 as the number two country in FIFA’s World Rankings, the highest ranked European side
