Nigeria national team captain and former Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi is set to complete his move to Championship side Middlesbrough having underwent his medicals today.
According to the Sun, the 31-year-old midfielder was in England this morning for his compulsory medical which he reportedly passed.
Boro, as they are fondly called, will confirm his signature later tomorrow (Thursday) which will make him the first signing by Boro at the ongoing transfer market.
Mikel spent 11 years at Stamford Bridge before he switched to Chinese Super League side Tianjin Teda two seasons ago.
Though he signed a three-year contract with the Chinese side, Mikel failed to keep his own part of the bargain due to Teda’s relegation to the second division.
The British publication further revealed that the free agent will be with Middlesbrough till the end of the season.
Considering the player’s experience and ability to dictate play at the middle of the pitch, Middlesbrough are happy with the player’s signature and the can’t wait to start working with him.
As for Tony Pulis, the former West Brom manager will count on Mikel’s experience to lead the team to another level before the end of of the season.
The Championship side are also targeting a move young striker Josh Maja who plays for Sunderland. The Black Cats striker is being tracked by host of Premier League clubs such as Crystal Palace, Cardiff, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur but Sky Sports revealed Tony Pulis is leading the park for his signature.
