Arsenals’ attempt to sign one of AS Monaco’s star players has been brought to an end for now.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has managed to secure the services of Sead Kolasinac on a free transfer this summer transfer window to strengthen his options in the defensive department.
However, the Arsenal boss was thought to be also pursuing the signature of France International defender Djibril Sidibe whom he tried and failed to sign a year ago.
Sidibe, 24, had been heavily linked with a transfer to the North London club and a host of top European clubs this summer transfer window, but a deal to join Arsenal now look unlikely following his agreement to sign a new five-year contract at the club.
The defender’s impressive performances earned him his first International call-up to the France national football team last season before the vice-president of Monaco Vadim Vasilyev disclosed he “deserved to join a top European club.”
A release on Monaco’s official site read: “Monaco are happy to announce the extension of the contract of Djibril Sidibe, who is now tied to the club until June 2022.”
Reigning Ligue one Champions Monaco announced on Thursday that the defender had committed his future to the French club, bringing an end to the pursuit of suitors including Arsenal.
