Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona are reportedly closing in on the signing of highly-rated Ajax Amsterdam defender Matthijs De Ligt ahead of the transfer window this summer.
This is according to the publication from the stables of popular media outlet Goal which claimed that an official announcement of his transfer is expected in the coming days.
It was revealed that a Barcelona contingent of Pep Segura, former player Eric Abidal, Oriol Grau and Ramon Planas met with the player’s agent Mino Raiola on April 12 in Monte Carlo.
Barcelona are expected to make an announcement after the end of the Dutch Eredivisie season this week.
The last set of Eredivisie games this season will take place on Wednesday evening with De Ligt and Ajax Amsterdam going for the league title.
Ajax is expected to be crowned champions on Wednesday night at the expense of rivals PSV Eindhoven.
They have a three-point lead at the top of the table with just a game left.
The Champions League semifinalists need just a point to wrap up the league title which will complete a domestic double having already bagged the Dutch Cup via the 4-0 thumping of Willem 11 earlier this month.
Barcelona have already signed De Ligt’s friend and club teammate Frenkie De Jong who signed for the club in January and he’s expected to join his new teammates this summer.
Matthijs De Ligt has been heavily linked with major European sides like Manchester City, Manchester United, Juventus and Liverpool apart from Barcelona.
