Virgil Van Dijk may currently be the world’s most expensive defender having cost Liverpool £75 million for his services from Southampton earlier this year. The Dutchman has no doubt repaid the Anfield outfit every penny of his transfer fee going by his performances so far.
Former Liverpool player, Phil Babb has joined the growing list of players pouring accolades on the 27-year-old Dutchman when he told LFCTV that the player has been immense and an absolute tower.
He added: “People question the amount of money spent for him, but he’s been worth every penny so far.
“He has really helped to turn Anfield back into a fortress – no goals conceded in the league [at home] I believe since his arrival.
“He just a colossus, is calming influence, great on the ball but commanding in the air.”
“The other thing about Van Dijk is, Joe Gomez is learning from him as well by watching a master craftsman playing alongside him.”
21-year-old Joe Gomez who currently partners the former Southampton defender in the centre half has seen a marked improvement in his overall performance for Liverpool. Thus, it seems Van Dijk’s performance is rubbing off the youngster positively.
Much of Liverpool’s acclaim as being Premier League title contenders this season has come from not just their attacking prowess but their defensive abilities at the back and they have Van Dijk to thank for some of these impressive performances.
On a lighter note, Jurgen Klopp was asked ahead of his side’s game against Brighton & Hove Albion what kind of car he would compare Van Dijk to. He likened the Dutchman to a high-quality car. A ‘SUWee’ to be exact.
