Luke Shaw withdrew from the England squad for Sunday’s World Cup qualifier in Slovakia after missing training on Saturday morning. The 21-year-old left-back has only just returned from double leg-break and has started the season well with Manchester United. He was replaced in training at St George’s Park by Arsenal’s Tafari Moore, who is part of the Under-20s set-up, and did not fly with the team. Shaw now misses out on a potential England return having last been capped almost a year ago in a 2-0 Euro 2016 qualifying victory over Switzerland at Wembley. Shaw was not due to start in manager Sam Allardyce’s first game in charge, with Tottenham’s Danny Rose preferred at left-back. The Football Association confirmed on Saturday evening that Shaw would … [Read more...]

Bastian Schweinsteiger out of Europa Leauge squad
Bastian Schweinsteiger has been left out of Manchester United's squad for the Europa League group stage. The World Cup-winning Germany star has been completely frozen out at Old Trafford since Jose Mourinho's arrival as manager. He has yet to feature in any of Mourinho's squads this season and the Portuguese has admitted it will be "very difficult" to give the 32-year-old any playing time this season. Schweinsteiger, who joined the club from Bayern Munich in 2015, still has two years left on his contract and is determined to stay. But Mourinho has delivered another snub to the veteran German by excluding him from his 27-man Europa League squad list. It means he will not be available for any of the group stage games against Feyenoord, Fenerbahce and … [Read more...]

Gareth Bale not bothered by Paul Pogba surpassing his record fee
Gareth Bale says he is not bothered by losing the tag of the world's most expensive player to Paul Pogba. Bale's three-year reign as the most expensive player in football history ended when Pogba joined Manchester United from Juventus for £89million last month. That fee eclipsed the £85.3million Real Madrid paid Tottenham to sign Wales forward Bale in the summer of 2013. But Bale said: "I'm not fussed and I couldn't care less. "None of the players have pulled my leg on it." Bale was speaking at a UEFA Champions League gala dinner to launch the 'Road to Cardiff' with the 2017 final being held in his home city at what was known as the Millennium Stadium. The 27-year-old would become only the sixth player to win the European Cup or Champions League … [Read more...]

France extended their strong record on Italian soil with a 3-1 win in Bari in Giampiero Ventura's first match in charge of the Azzurri. First-half goals from Anthony Martial and Olivier Giroud, either side of a fine equaliser by Graziano Pelle put France ahead before Layvin Kurzawa's late strike wrapped up a match that exposed Italy's defensive frailties. Ventura lined Italy up with Fiorentina's Davide Astori in a back three that was missing Leonardo Bonucci due to the Juventus player's family commitments, and a mistake from Andrea Barzagli allowed Martial to score easily after 17 minutes. Italy enjoyed long spells of … [Read more...]
