Premier League champions Manchester City suffered a scare in their quest to win an unprecedented quadruple in English football during their FA Cup clash with English Championship club Swansea City on Saturday.
Manchester City are chasing honours in three more trophies namely the FA Cup, the Premier League and the Champions League having already won the Carabao Cup last month.
Pep Guardiola and his players won the first trophy of the season by beating Chelsea on penalties in the Carabao Cup final.
Manchester City travelled to Wales as overwhelming favourites to take on Welsh side Swansea City in an FA Cup quarterfinal match but the Citizens didn’t have it their own way after they had to turnaround a 2-0 halftime deficit.
At the halftime interval against Swansea City, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and his players were almost powerless as their quadruple dream was been swept away via a spirited first half performance from the Swans.
Pep Guardiola had rested some big hitters for the game and he had to bring them on to rescue the game with three second half goals.
Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Oleksandr Zinchenko all came off the bench in the second half to good effect to help Manchester City to a 3-2 win and a spot in the semifinal.
Manchester City were also lucky with the last two of the three goals scored and they will need more like that in their quest to sweep all the four trophies on offer for them.
The game against Swansea City showed that there’s little margin for error for the Citizens in their quadruple bid.
In the Premier League, Manchester City had a one-point lead over title rival Liverpool at the start of the weekend but the Reds have moved above the holders on the table after their 2-1 win at the home of relegation candidates Fulham.
Manchester City were not in league action due to their FA Cup commitment and that has left them two points behind top spot on the league table having played a game less.
In the race for the Premier League title, Manchester City have eight games left while rivals Liverpool have seven games to play.
Lastly, Manchester City still have much work to do in the Champions League just like what’s obtainable in the Premier League. According to latest surveys, City are the favourites to win the Champions league.
They have a Premier League Derby in the Champions League quarterfinals with either Ajax Amsterdam or Juventus waiting in the wings in the semifinal.
In conclusion, the quadruple dream is a difficult one to achieve but Manchester City have the quality to do it and they will also need luck with injuries and on the pitch just like the one they enjoyed against Swansea City.
