Former Monaco star player Benjamin Mendy was one of the hottest prospects during the summer transfer window after he emerged as a target for a handful of top English clubs including Chelsea and Manchester City.
Mendy chose to move to Manchester City during the window, and Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev has revealed that the player ignored Chelsea because he was not interested in working with Italian manager Antonio Conte.
According to the Metro, Vadim reveals that the Frenchman was willing to remain with the Ligue I champions if he was unable to secure a move to the Etihad Stadium to work under City’s boss Pep Guardiola.
Both Chelsea and Man City were linked with the fullback during the window, but it was Pep Guardiola’s side who eventually got his signature for £52 million.
Apart from Benjamin, Chelsea were also linked with Juventus star man Alex Sandro, but the Serie A champions failed to sell him to any club during the summer, leaving the blues with no other choice but to complete a deadline day deal for Torino’s Davide Zappacosta to provide competition for Nigerian international Victor Moses.
Mendy has settled quickly at England and in Pep Guardiola’s team, with the citizens winning three of their opening four premier league games. Benjamin himself played a big role helping his new side beat Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool 5-0 on Saturday.
