Representatives of Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney have come out to defend him after a picture of him looking like he had drank heavily while celebrating the victory over Scotland last Friday appeared.
A picture of the England international looking drunk was published by the Sun newspaper who claimed that the forward was awake till 5am in the morning having drinks at a private wedding after the win over Scotland.
The 31-year-old started the world cup qualifier against Scotland but he picked up a knee injury and was withdrawn from the England national team squad and missed the 2-2 draw against Spain on Tuesday night.
When asked if Rooney was taken out of the squad to face Spain because of the incident, England manager Gareth Southgate said “Wayne was injured. He picked up an injury on Friday, couldn’t train Sunday and that’s it.”
The Mirror reports Rooney’s camp responded to the publication by stating
“Wayne, along with the rest of the England squad, was on a night off duty. Rather than going out, he chose to stay at the team hotel to relax and celebrate a fine England victory against Scotland.
During the course of the evening he was approached by numerous fellow guests for autographs and pictures.
As he has always been, Wayne was happy to sign, pose for photos and chat with guests. It is sad that one or two of them have now sought to turn Wayne’s friendly good nature to their advantage.”
It remains to be seen if the English FA will charge Rooney and if he will be fit to play for Manchester United against Arsenal this weekend.
