English Premier League side SOUTHAMPTON FC have finally given Jose Fonte the go ahead to leave in January, reports stated.
The star player has been locked in contract talks with Southampton and it was reported that all attempts to agree a new deal with the club keeps failing, despite the fact that different teams are already placing their eyes on him.
With United’s manager Jose Mourinho looking forward to the January window transfer to strengthen his defense department, it was reported that the red devils are frontrunners to sign the 32-year-old.
MaisFutebol reported that Southampton have made a ‘pact’ with the defender who was part of Portugal Euro 2016-winning side this summer, allowing him to leave the club next month.
Southampton have assured Fonte they will not stand in his way should he wish to leave the club in January.
Reports has it that the EURO 2016 hero was been denied a move in the summer, and his unwillingness to sign a new deal has prompted Southampton to agree to let him go.
He is under contract at St Mary’s until June 2018 meaning Claude Puel’s side will need to cash in on the centre-back sooner rather than later.
Southampton’s management are hoping to get a fee of between £5million and £7m for Fonte, the report stated further.
Jose Fonte joined Southampton FC from Crystal Palace in 2010. His outstanding performances earned him the club captain, and he has made over 280 appearances for the Saints.
