Bastian Schweinsteiger received an emotional Germany farewell on Wednesday night, with the Manchester United midfielder brought to tears in his final match for his nation. Schweinsteiger, 32, was cheered by 30,121 fans at the Borussia Park whenever he picked up possession, before being withdrawn in the 68th minute and replaced by Julian Weigl, as Germany beat Finland 2-0 thanks to goals from Maximilian Meyer and Paulus Arajuuri. The former Bayern Munich player won his 121st and final cap for Germany, bringing to an end his 12-year international career. Wayne Rooney retains England captaincy
Wayne Rooney will continue as England captain after manager Sam Allardyce made the "easy'' decision to retain his services. Rooney, 30, has led his country for the past two years, but after taking over from Roy Hodgson following Euro 2016, Allardyce initially refused to confirm he would keep the armband. Allardyce also declined to name a skipper in his first squad announcement on Sunday night, adding a minor element of intrigue, but the Manchester United forward always looked the firm favourite. Official: #ThreeLions manager @OfficialBigSam has confirmed that @WayneRooney is to remain as captain. https://t.co/MA6TdNTUhl - England (@England) August 29, 2016 Question marks over his place in the team appear to have been answered by a strong start to … [Read more...]
United want to keep Marcos Rojo – agent
In spite of being heavily linked with a move away from the club, it appears that Marcos Rojo will be staying at Manchester United. Marcos Rojo's agent has revealed that Manchester United have rejected several offers for the Argentinian in this transfer window. Former Sporting CP defender Rojo arrived at Old Trafford in 2014 in a reported £14million deal, with then United manager Louis van Gaal having been impressed by his performances at the World Cup. However, the 26-year-old, who has been linked with a switch to Valencia, is yet to feature in a Premier League game under Van Gaal's successor Jose Mourinho. But despite the Argentine seemingly being surplus to requirements, his representative Carlos Goncalves has stated that United are not looking to … [Read more...]
Manchester United target Fabinho to stay at Monaco
Manchester United have been heavily linked with Fabinho, but the 22-year-old expects to stay at Monaco to play in the Champions League. Monaco defender Fabinho says Champions League football will likely be enough to convince him to stay at the French club, despite links with Manchester United. The 22-year-old scored a late penalty in the second leg to seal a 3-1 aggregate win over Villarreal in the play-off round and book Monaco's spot in the group stage, where they will face Tottenham, CSKA Moscow and Bayer Leverkusen. Reports in England have claimed that Jose Mourinho wants to sign Fabinho before Wednesday's transfer deadline, but while the Brazilian would not rule out a move away from Stade Louis II, he expects to stay. "With the Champions League, … [Read more...]
Jose Mourinho hails Marcus Rashford
Jose Mourinho said that substitute and match-winner Marcus Rashford gave Manchester United a "diversity" in their football during their 1-0 win against Hull City and predicted that the 18-year-old will play "a lot of matches for sure." Rashford scored in the second minute of added time at the end of the game, 20 minutes after coming off the bench, to seal victory. He had looked likely before then, causing problems to Hull with his pace. Speaking in his news conference after Saturday's win, Mourinho said: "When we brought the kid to the game, it gave us a diversity of football. We started playing a different way. Of course we had a bit of luck at the end. "He's very good. I knew that last season. Working with him every day, I think the same. "Tonight … [Read more...]
Marcus Rashford scores as Man United grab late win
Marcus Rashford was Manchester United’s hero, coming off the bench to score a late winner in the 1-0 win at Hull. The United teenager, a second-half replacement for Juan Mata, turned home Wayne Rooney’s slide-rule pass for the only goal of the game in the second minute of time added on to finally break Hull’s brave resistance and send the newly-promoted club to their first defeat of the season. It was a tough pill to swallow for Hull, who would have deserved a point for their sheer endeavour had they managed to hold on, but United’s patience was finally rewarded and it is they who join Chelsea at the top of the table. Such was Hull’s tenacity and discipline, especially on the edge of their penalty area, United found chances hard to come by in the first … [Read more...]
Mourinho suggests Man United transfer business over after Pereira loan
Jose Mourinho has said the departure of Andreas Pereira will be the last piece of business done by Manchester United this summer. Young midfielder Pereira is set to join Spanish Granada on loan after the 20-year-old’s move to Fulham broke down. Mourinho is understood to be keen to add an experienced centre-back and a right-back to his squad, while there are question marks over the futures of a number of players currently at Old Trafford. However, the Portuguese suggests he is happy with the size of his squad and says he is prepared to call upon academy players if the squad is hit by injuries or suspensions. “I have 23 players in the squad and, in principle, there is nobody leaving and nobody is coming,” he said. “It’s more than enough and if you … [Read more...]
