Arsenal lacking fit strikers as search continues

Arsenal are struggling with injuries up top and have so far failed to sign a new leading man.

SSC Napoli v FC Internazionale Milano - Serie A

Danny Welbeck is out long-term after suffering another knee injury near the end of last season and isn’t expected back until around February at the earliest.

Elsewhere, Olivier Giroud has now gone on his summer holidays after Euro 2016 .

As France reached the final of the tournament, Giroud now begins his three week break and won’t be match fit when the campaign gets underway at home to Liverpool.

Arsenal face two crucial fixtures: hosting Jurgen Klopp’s side on August 14 before travelling to champions Leicester the following weekend.

Jamie Vardy could have been in red but rejected a move to Arsenal in favour of staying at the King Power Stadium.

Jamie Vardy could have been in red but rejected a move to Arsenal in favour of staying at the King Power Stadium.

And according to sources, Arsenal are increasingly resigned to the fact they will not sign a top striker this summer.

Alvaro Morata , Alexandre Lacazette and Romelu Lukaku have all been linked with the Gunners, but a new arrival up top is not in the pipeline.

As a result, Akpom is set to challenge Theo Walcott for the starting role in pre-season as Wenger’s only options to lead the line.

However, Walcott has been shifted to the wing more of late at the Emirates having lost out to Giroud in the battle to play through the middle last season
