Wayne Rooney is interested in extending his deal with Manchester United even further than the three seasons he has left on his contract.
Rooney, 30, has been playing in midfield for England at Euro 2016 and was also in a deeper role for United in the closing stages of last season and says he is viewing Ryan Giggs as a role model, with the former United winger having prolonged his career by shifting into a midfield role in the latter stages of his career.
New United manager Jose Mourinho recently said of Rooney: “Wayne is and has been England’s best player for over a decade,” showing the high regard that the Portuguese has for the player.
When Mourinho returned to Chelsea as manager for a second spell in summer 2013, he had quickly tried to sign Rooney, though in February 2014, Rooney signed a four-year contract extension, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2019.
Speaking in the new edition of the United We Stand fanzine as reported, Rooney said: “I have a contract at the club that I want to see out and wouldn’t be against extending it but that’s up to the club.
“All players’ games develop and change over time. Look at Giggsy towards the end of his career compared to the beginning. What I can say is I will continue to develop my game and adapt and improve throughout.
“Over time and with experience, you see the game and experience the game differently, which leads to different decisions.
“I think my record shows I have always enjoyed assisting goals as much as scoring them and I also enjoy the involvement from deeper positions.”
