Five weeks ago, the Premier League title race was between four clubs — Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham — and we all thought the competition will go down the wire but that might not be the case.
CHELSEA PULLED OUT OF TITLE RACE
Chelsea, despite their brilliant start to the season, were the first top-four club to pull out the race for the title.
Maurizio Sarri’s men recorded a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Wolves three weeks ago which pushed them to the fourth position. They however returned back to winning ways against another title contenders Manchester City as they thrashed the Citizens 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Maurizio Sarri men registered their second consecutive victory when they pipped Brighton 2-1 at the Amex stadium. The result didn’t have any massive effect as they still remained in the fourth position.
When we thought the Blues are back in contention for their third Premier glory in five seasons, Maurizio Sarri’s men were shocked by Leicester City.
The Foxes, who haven’t had a smooth season so far, picked maximum points against them at the King Power Stadium last week Saturday.
Though they recorded another confident-boosting victory against Watford at the Vicarage Road last night, I’m afraid it’s too late for them to challenge for the League’s ultimate prize.
They are 11 points behind League leaders Liverpool with 19 more matches to play.
MANCHESTER CITY LOST THEIR INVINCIBILITY
The current title holders were one of three clubs who kept their unbeaten record till the 11th match of the season.
Having lost their unbeaten record to Wolves some days earlier, Chelsea ensured the Citizens couldn’t preserve theirs.
Pep Guardiola’s men were far from convincing during the Stamford Bridge’s clash and they were unsurprisingly beaten by Chelsea with a two-goal margin.
Since the defeat to Chelsea, the Citizens haven’t been the same, they’ve lost their spark, confidence and all other winning traits they possessed throughout last season.
They’ve registered two defeats in two weeks ( Crystal Palace and Leicester City), and they are now third on the table with 44 points, seven behind Liverpool.
TOTTENHAM IN FINE FORM, CAN THEY DENY THE REDS?
11 goals in two matches, that sums up the form Mauricio Pochetino’s men are enjoying right now.
Their newfound goalscoring feat should be the source of concern for Klopp and his players. Tottenham seem to be the only team capable of stopping the Reds from lifting the Premier League trophy.
The North London club have witnessed rapid developments under Mauricio Pochetino but they are yet to clinch any silverware and that might change if the Reds should slumber in the title race.
They are close behind the Merseyside club in the second position with 45 points, six behind their arch-rivals.
LIVERPOOL TO END THEIR TROPHY DROUGHT
Liverpool are the only club yet to taste defeat after 19 League games. Jurgen Klopp men sit comfortably at the summit of the table with 51 points.
The only thing that can stop the team from lifting the trophy is overconfidence and complacency.
As long as they remain focused in the race for the crown, I see no team getting closer to them in terms of performance and results.
