Merseyside giant Liverpool have lost their red card appeal over the length of winger Sadio Mane’s three-match ban after he was red carded in Saturday’s 5-0 thrashing at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City.
The Senegalese was sent off in the 37th minute of the clash after catching Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson in the cheek with a high foot.
The African will now miss English Premier League games against FC Burnley and Leicester City, as well as a visit to the latter in the English Football League Cup.
The excessive punishment claim was turned down after a hearing by an independent regulatory commission.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp stated on Saturday that neither he nor Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola felt Sadio Mane should have been red carded.
Match of the Day analysts Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, and Ian Wright all admitted they would have gone for the ball just like Mane did, while Chris Sutton told MOTD 2 that the winger’s red card should be revoked.
However, Alan Shearer said it was still a sending off under the current Premier League rules. Former England players Jamie Carragher and Phil Neville were also among pundits and football fans to say center referee Jon Moss was right to send Mane off.
Man City goalkeeper Ederson trained on Tuesday morning as the Etihad club prepares for their opening UEFA Champions League group match against Dutch side Feyenoord on Wednesday.
