EFL Cup Ouster: Fans Right To Boo ‘Poor’ Arsenal – Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that fans were right to boo his players during his side’s 2-0 loss to Southampton at the Emirates Stadium in what was the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

It was a shambolic first half performance from the Gunners and they were subsequently booed off by their fans with scores at 2-0 in favour of Southampton courtesy goals from Dutch international Jordy Clasie and English left back Ryan Bertrand.

The impressive win represents the first time Southampton would qualify for the last four of the league cup since 1986.

On the reaction of the fans to his team’s display, Wenger, who made ten changes from the Arsenal side that defeated Bournemouth 3-1 stated that they have to live with the fans’ expectations as follows:

“The fans never expect too much. It’s down to us to give them what they want. It is a fact. We have to live with that.”
“We had a disappointing performance, particularly in the first half. I think we were not good enough defensively and gave cheap goals away.
“It was better in the second, but it was one of those nights where you look like you could play two hours without scoring a goal. We didn’t have enough urgency in the first half and were weak in some departments.
“We paid for that. We were not incisive enough in the first half especially. They played deeper in the second half and were sharper than us and fitter.” he concluded.
