Willian flattered by Mourinho interest but had no intentions joining former boss

Willian has insisted he was never interested in joining Jose Mourinho at Manchester United but admits Chelsea must improve if they’re to challenge them for the title.

The Brazil international, who was voted the club’s Player of the Year last season, was targeted by the former Chelsea boss following his own arrival at Old Trafford this summer.

But Willian opted to commit his long-term future to Chelsea instead, signing a new four-year deal.

“I have a great relationship with Jose, but I am Chelsea,” said Willian, when asked if the prospect of joining Mourinho, who signed him as Chelsea boss in 2013, ever tempted him.

“Of course, when someone like him [Mourinho] is interested in you then you are happy. But I signed the contract because I like being a Chelsea player and I see good things here.”

Chelsea suffered their worst season for 20 years last term and sacked Mourinho in December.

Former Italy coach Antonio Conte is now in charge and is already starting to make an impact during pre-season.

However, the 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid on Saturday highlighted some weaknesses and showed there is still a lot of work to do.

Willian is desperate to avoid another trophy-less campaign, and added: “The game against Madrid was disappointing and we are going to have to improve a lot more.

“I signed a new contract and that shows how much I want to stay here. But the simple thing is that I want to win titles.

“To win titles you have to improve and if we can do that then we have a great chance to win titles this season.

“We have the players to do this – and the manager. We must work hard and when we have the ball then we have to play good football.

“This season it can’t be just about defence, defence, defence. We have to play good football and attack.”
