Victor Moses : What’s next for the Chelsea winger

victor moses

Life at Chelsea has been a bittersweet experience for Victor Moses who was one of the best wingers in the Premier League some years ago.

At Wigan athletic in 2011, the Nigerian international was in blistering form, his dribbling skills could be likened to Eden Hazard’s, his eye for goal is nothing short of wonders.

All of these traits put together are the major reasons why Chelsea were eager to capture his services before the start of 2012-13 season.

Having initially rejected the Blues offer, Wigan eventually accepted Chelsea’s bid for the 27-year-old and he joined the Premier League giants.

Moses career at Chelsea begins with the game against QPR where he featured as second-half substitute.

He went on to feature in 23 Premier League matches, scoring once in his first season. However, he had nine goals in other competitions, making it 10 goals in total.

Despite scoring 10 goals in his debut season at Stamford Bridge, the former Crystal Palace man was surprisingly loaned out to Liverpool and that’s how things began to fall apart for the winger.

After three consecutive loan moves to Liverpool, Stoke City and West Ham United, Moses was finally integrated into the team in 2016 during Conte’s era.

Conte changed Chelsea’s tactical approach to games as they were converted from 4-4-2 /4-3-3 formation used by Mourinho to 3-4-3/ 3-5-2. This style of play requires at least two very quick wing-backs who are capable of turning defense into attack as soon as they get the ball.

In Moses, Conte saw the perfect right wing-back to execute his tactical plans.

There was a new resurgence to Moses career at Chelsea. The 27-year-old didn’t just become a regular player in Conte squad, he was equally one of the most integral part of Chelsea team.

Throughout the two seasons spent by the Italian manager, Moses wasn’t left on the bench unless there is a need for mandatory rest or injury.

In Conte’s title-winning season, the Nigerian star– who recently retired from international football– racked up 40 appearances in all competitions and he scored just four goals.

In the 2017-18 season, Moses continued his great form and he was part of the team.

Though things didn’t go Chelsea’s way, Moses continued to feature more prominently in Conte’s team.

Despite winning a trophy (FA Cup) for the second consecutive seasons, the former Juventus manager was sacked by his employers as a result of unhealthy relationships between both parties.

Conte’s sacking turned out to be a very bad omen for Victor Moses’ rise to stardom at Stamford Bridge. Maurizio Sarri, who is Conte’s replacement, is never a fan of the 3-4-3 formation, hence, Moses is back to a fringe part of the team.

What’s next for Moses

With Pedro, Willian, Hazard ahead of him in the pecking order, Moses is finding it very difficult to get time under Sarri. He has featured in just four League games and has failed to appear on the squad list in six consecutive matches.

The former Napoli manager has, however, told reporters that the player is surplus to requirements meaning he’s free to move on with his career elsewhere in January.

Meanwhile, it remains unknown where his next destination would be. Reports claim that Manchester United are looking at his direction as Mourinho looks to adopt a 3-4-3/ 3-5-2 formation in the coming season.

This may appear to be mere speculation because Mourinho is never impressed with Moses quality and style of play.

Other rumours suggest that Crystal Palace and Wolves are interested in him but it remains to be seen if Moses is willing to join a relegation threatened side.

As it stands, only time would tell what will be the next line of action for the 27-year-old winger
