Unai Emery handed season target

Unai Emery

It might be too early to give a call on the Arsenal season, but it is evident that the start of the season has been quite slow.

So far, the team has seen two wins and two defeats, making them little behind in the title race.

Arsenal have got a new manager, Unai Emery who took over from Wenger after the Frenchman’s 22-year-reign at the club.

The major achievement of the new boss will be returning the London club back to playing in the Champions League and that is now being threatened with the current position of the club on the log.

In order to make this achievable, Paul Merson has advised the Spaniard that his target should be winning the Europa League this season as that will be a more easier way of returning to Champions League football.

Emery has got the experience and success history in the Europa League, having won it with Sevilla.

Merson who played in the final, the last time the Gunners tasted European glory has set this season’s target for the current manager.

He said foreign managers have always liked to compete in the competition and it will be good for Emery to do same.

He recalled the last time Arsenal won a European trophy 1994, the game that ended in a 1-0 win over Parma in the Cup Winners Cup final.

Emerson cast doubts over the ability of the former PSG manager’s team to win of winning the Premier League, noting that Arsenal have got a better advantage in the Europa League.

The winners of the competition automatically enter the group stage of the following seasons Champions League and it would mean a double for Arsenal.
