Liverpool Legend Dies After Sickness Battle

Former Liverpool defender Tommy Smith has passed away after losing his battle with sickness.

The Liverpool legend had been battling with Alzheimer disease for the last five years before his death was revealed on Friday.

The Reds confirmed his passing away at the age of 74 via a statement from their official Twitter handle.

Former Reds defender Tommy Smith was a defensive stalwart for the team that conquered both local and European football.

Tommy Smith was part of the Liverpool first team between 1962 and 1978.

He scored 48 goals in 638 games for Liverpool during his playing career at Anfield.

Tommy Smith was a key member of the Liverpool squad that won four First Division titles, two FA Cup titles, two UEFA Cup titles and a European Cup title.

He spent his football career at Anfield under legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly.

With 638 games for the club, Tommy Smith is the eighth all-time appearance maker in the history of the club.

The current crop of Liverpool players will be hoping to emulate the legendary status of the likes of Tommy Smith by winning both the Premier League and Champions League to kick-start a possible dominant era for the Reds though they will have to fend off rivals Manchester City.
