Confirmed: Ex-Liverpool Winger To Leave Middlesbrough THIS Summer

English Championship club Middlesbrough have confirmed that winger Stewart Downing will leave the club this summer upon the expiration of his contract.

The announcement was made by the club earlier on Thursday.

Middlesbrough will spend another season in the English Championship after they missed out on the playoffs and they have started to shake things up with the exit of their manager and some players.

Boro manager Tony Pulis left the club earlier this month after his contract expired having failed in the bid to at least seal a playoff spot.

Aston Villa won the four-team playoffs via a 2-1 win over Derby County in the final to join the duo of Norwich City and Sheffield United in the Premier League next season.

Former Liverpool winger Stewart Downing was released alongside three others namely Ex-Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi, Andy Lonergan and Dimi Kostantopoulos.

Downing has made 404 appearances for Middlesbrough over two spells and was also an integral part of the Boro side that won the 2004 League Cup title at the expense of Bolton Wanderers.

Apart from the four players released, three loanees have also gone back to their parent clubs.

Mohamed Besic (Everton), Rajiv Van La Parra (Huddersfield Town) and Jordan Hugill (West Ham United) have all gone back to their clubs.
