Premier League Glory: Are Manchester United still in the race

Jose Mourinho

Manchester United have found themselves in very delicate situations which has led to so many questions from fans — is this really Manchester United? Is Mourinho the best manager the board member could afford? Why is the team playing without definite pattern? Is this team really in the race for the League title?

These are the pressing questions that seems rhetorically, yet, only one person is in the best position to answer all questions correctly — José Mourinho.

The Red Devils are 16 points behind Manchester City as they helplessly lie in the Seventh position on the League table.

Being Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho is expected to often compete for many trophies, especially the Premier League title.

The Portuguese manager hasn’t been able to do just that and that’s really affecting the growth of the club.

How far has been with Mourinho’s men this season

Mourinho and his men have been nothing but poor right from the start of the campaign.

Their misfortune all started with a 3-2 defeat to Brighton in the second match of the season, followed by another shambolic display against Palace, West Ham, and Man City.

In all the 14 matches played so far, the Red Devils have won just six, drawn four and lost four, leaving them with just 22 points.

The Old Trafford outfits have also conceded much goals that you could ever expect from a club of United’s Calibre.

Despite the presence of David De Gea — who is somewhat off-form — in goal, the 20-time Premier League Champions have conceded 23 goals . That’s quite enormous if you would ask me.

To make matters more complicated for themselves, the team haven’t been scoring goals, unlike the United we knew under sir Alex Ferguson.

They have scored just 22 goals after 14 matches, compared to their local rivals Manchester City, who have 43 goals, and Liverpool who have saved 27 goals.

Surprisingly, Anthony Martial, whom Mourinho reportedly declared ‘surplus to requirements’ in September, has become the best striker  at Old Trafford all of a sudden.

Lukaku is still in one of his regular off-form period, though, he broke his goal drought against Southampton on Saturday.

The Belgian was tagged inconsistent striker by his critics, to be fair with the striker, he hasn’t done enough to prove them wrong since his move to Old Trafford from Everton in 2017.

Of all the questions listed above, the most important one that needed urgent answer — Is Manchester United title contenders?

There are still 24 matches to the end of the season, hence, it may be too early to write off any team in the race for the ultimate crown.

However, the Red Devils will have to do it the hard way by winning almost all League games, then, hope that City and other contenders — Liverpool and Chelsea — fail to remain in their current blistering form.

Football is a game with so many surprises, therefore, Mourinho can still turn the table to his side’s favour as the season progress.
