According to reports, Manchester United will make another approach for Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic as they believe they can lure the Premier League champions to sell the Serbian.
United are aware a deal for the midfielder will be in the region of around £40m as manager Jose Mourinho sees signing a new defensive midfielder as the primary priority for this summer.
Mourinho is still looking to sign a winger and a fullback, but the Chelsea man remains a top transfer target having worked with him at Chelsea.
The Old Trafford club felt rivals Chelsea would turn down a transfer due to the hijacking of their offer for Romelu Lukaku from Merseyside club Everton, however, the Blues’ recent progress in the transfer market has given United hierarchy renewed hope about the deal.
The fact that the Serbian wants to go to Old Trafford above any other club also helps even with strong interest from Serie A Champions Juventus and Internazionale as it could also lessen a potential transfer fee.
The Manchester United boss had also identified Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier for the position, but it was clear that Spurs are totally unwilling to sell the England international midfielder.
The United boss has been downcast with the lack of progress so far but still expects two more signings before the transfer window ends.
