After a 19-year campaign at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea legend John Terry has eventually completed a move to Championship side Aston Villa this week. And as expected, a new captain is meant to be named by the manager Antonio Conte on the club’s pre-season tour.
And according to the latest update, Chelsea defender David Luiz has emerged as a shock contender to replace the former England international as Chelsea’s captain next term after emerging as a candidate for the blues Italian manager.
Englishman Gary Cahill has been widely projected to succeed John, and another strong candidate is Cesar Azpilicueta.
However, The Sun is reporting that David has emerged as a frontrunner to become captain at Stamford Bridge after impressing his manager last term.
Luiz was brought back to Stamford Bridge last summer from PSG on the last day of the transfer window for a deal worth £30million, and the Samba star played a great role helping the west London club win the Premier League title.
And even while he was injured at some point through the season, the Brazilian international struggled on and helped Antonio Conte win the premier league title in his first campaign at England – and the Italian manager is said to be highly impressed.
John Terry took over the skipper position in 2004 and has held on to it till he made a move this summer.
