Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentis has confirmed that Manchester United had submitted a bid for Kalidou Koulibaly before the departure of manager Jose Mourinho.
The former United boss was keen on having the signature of the star defender as he believed that his defence was part of his problem at the club.
United from the start of the season add more quality to their defence as they struggled with Marcos Rojo, Phils Jones and Chris Smalling who were all battling with fitness.
The Red Devils were left with no choice than to show the Portuguese international the exit door after the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at the Anfield in their last Premier League game.
However, Napoli chief Aurelio de Laurentis confirmed that his side received a bid from the Red Devils for the Senegal international which he hinted was the working of the former manager.
Aurelio de Laurentis therefore stated that it is impossible for the star player to leave Naples at the moment as he would not be released.
Meanwhile, United had signed Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof for a total fee of about £60 million under the former Chelsea boss but he insisted it was not enough to get the team going.
