Manchester United urged to sign Arsenal’s pacey midfielder

Former Republic of Ireland star Cunningham feels Manchester United should do everything possible to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer transfer window.

The England international has recently rejected a new Arsenal deal beyond next summer transfer window, and this has increased rumours over his future with Premier League duo of Chelsea and Liverpool credited with interest.

Following Manchester United’s 2-1 Super Cup loss to European Champions Real Madrid in midweek, Cunningham was critical of the performance of United’s Ander Herrera and feels the Red Devils should put together an enticing bid to sign the England international.

“Oxlade-Chamberlain has 12 months remaining on his deal at Arsenal, they (Manchester United) should be breaking the bank to sign that type of player to the club (United),” Cunningham told RTE Sport h/t The Independent.“That would improve them in that area (aspect) of the pitch.”

Cunningham, a former Southampton graduate, has been a bit-part player during his playing time at Arsenal, but he showed great progress towards the end of last campaign where he was played as a wing-back in a 3-4-2-1 setup.

Chamberlain sees his playing career as more of a central midfielder, and he could probably emerge as a late transfer option for manager Jose Mourinho, who had tried to sign him previously at Chelsea FC. The 23-year-old scored two goals and provided a further seven assists for Arsenal last season.
