Manchester United Legend Uses Chelsea To Make Point About Arsenal

Manchester United former defender Rio Ferdinand has accused Arsenal of lacking the grit needed to grind out games as Chelsea have been doing this season.

He told Arsene Wenger’s men that they can learn a lot from Chelsea‘s ability to adapt their style according to the opposition.

Arsenal are currently reeling from their humiliating 5-1 destruction at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday night as their European hopes were all but ended in an emphatic fashion.

Right now, the Emirate club are in the fourth position on the Premier League table and are also 10 points behind leaders Chelsea as they warm up for their FA Cup fifth-round clash against Sutton United on Monday.

And former Manchester United man Rio Ferdinand feels that Arsenal could learn a lot by observing how Chelsea are able to grind results out against different opposition.

Ferdinand speaking to BT Sport before Arsenal’s loss to Bayern said the top teams are adaptable.

“They come up against certain opposition and they adapt their games to suit the game.

“Arsenal seem to play one particular way most of the time and can’t change.

“(Olivier) Giroud is probably the only difference, a point of reference in this team. He gives them something different and creates a presence in the box.

“But defensively can they grind it out? We see Chelsea this season. When it comes to grinding games out ugly they can do it.

“This Arsenal team have not proven that yet.”

Arsenal finished last season in the second position without a trophy.

What really concerned me about Arsenal performance at Bayern – Former Arsenal Defender Revealed

Martin Keown has his say on his former club’s 5-1 loss to Bayern Munich

The former Arsenal man admitted that he found Arsenal’s lack of fight in the second half concerning after their 5-1 loss at Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The London club fell behind in the first half after Arjen Robben’s superb opener but Chile international Alexis Sanchez managed to restore parity in the first leg of their last-16 clash before half-time.

Sanchez scored at the third attempt after his penalty was initially saved to net what appeared to be a vital away goal for Arsenal.

The German giants however stormed back into a commanding lead through goals from Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller and Thiago Alcantara in the second half.

Keown writing in his Daily Mail column talked about what he found particularly worrying about the gunners 5-1 loss at Bayern ahead of their trip to Sutton united in the FA Cup fifth round this weekend.

“With not even 24 hours behind us, how many people thought Arsenal would beat Bayern? What I was concerned by was the ease at which Bayern won the game. It looked like Arsenal had given up.”

Arsenal are yet to win the Champions League and have even failed to reach the last eight of the competition since 2010.

They are currently  in the fourth position in the Premier League table.
