Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho consoled his friend and fellow manager Claudio Ranieri after defending Premier League champions Leicester City made the decision to sack him last night.
Leicester City’s incredible title win saw them dethrone Chelsea as Jose’s contract was terminated in December 2015. Ranieri led the club through one of the most historic seasons in English footballing history last season.
And as a sort of coincidence, Mourinho’s last match before he was sacked last season at Chelsea was a 2-1 defeat at King Power Stadium to Leicester.
However since the summer, the Portuguese tactician steadied the ship at Manchester United, while the now former Leicester manager has struggled to replicate something close to last term’s achievements.
The Foxes are currently sitting on the 17th position in the league table and the management decided to act and part ways with the popular Italian – not even considering that the club are still in the Champions League.
And if we should consider Wednesday’s 2-1 loss away to Sevilla in their last 16 first leg at Spain, it can still be regarded as a decent result on the back of a horrid start to 2017.
Nevertheless, following his sack, the Italian coach has received much support from pundits, former players and also fellow managers – including his friend Jose Mourinho.
And last night, the Portuguese manager took to Instagram to show his support and also voiced out his opinion of how crazy he thinks the footballing world has become.
Mourinho, along with a picture of both of them smiling together, wrote: “CHAMPION OF ENGLAND and FIFA MANAGER OF THE YEAR sacked.
“That’s the new football Claudio. Keep smiling AMICO (friend).
“Nobody can delete the history you wrote.”
As things stands now, nobody has yet been lined up by Leicester to take over from Ranieri. However the likes of Nigel Pearson, Pardew and Avram Grant are already on the lips of some.
The defending champions must now prepare without a coach for their next game on Monday night at home to Liverpool.
Manchester United will play Southampton at Wembley on Sunday in the EFL Cup final.
