Manchester United are likely to stiff competition from Schalke for the signing of Swiss youngster Breel Embolo, according to reports in the German media.
Embolo has been heavily linked with Manchester United in reports say that new Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is keeping tabs on the Basel striker.
RB Leipzig, who have just recently been promoted to the Bundesliga, were claimed to be rivalling United for the 19-year-old’s signature and were also said to have made a bid in the region of £16million.
But Leipzig’s manager, Ralf Rangnick ruled out a move for the Swiss international recently.
Speaking to German newspaper, Leipziger Volkszeitung,
Rangnick says: “We’ve informed the agent of Embolo and Basel that we are no longer interested in his transfer.”
However it seems now that Schalke have entered themselves into the mix and will battle the Red Devils for Embolo’s services. According to Kicker, the Bundesliga club are looking to step up their interest in the striker due to the possible departure of Leroy Sane.
There has been recent speculation regarding Sane making a possible to Manchester City and also Schalke’s experienced striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is expected to move to Ajax over the summer as well.
It is also reported that Basel are wanting a fee of around £20million for the youngster. The Swiss starlet’s impressive performances for Basel look to have certainly not gone unnoticed after the player scored 13 goals in 40 appearances for the Swiss club last season, bringing his total to 25 in 61.
Embolo will inject some more youth into Manchester United’s attack and could be welcome edition among fans, especially along with the seemingly imminent arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
