Many Chelsea supporters only knew that Antonio Conte was signed last summer to manage the club, but not many are aware that lots of things occurred behind the scenes, and Conte might not have been the boss!
Jorge Sampaoli, former Chile head coach, made some revelations in a recent interview.
He took charge of Chile in 2012, and he led the South America country to win the Copa America three years later.
The 57-year-old who is now in charge at La Liga side Sevilla, revealed the real reason he stopped coaching Chile despite his fame rose at the South American country.
The manager stated that he was in the race to replace Jose Mourinho at Chelsea as the Stamford Bridge outfit were interested in appointing him last year.
Speaking to the Sun, Jorge stated that the Chilean Federation wants him to remain no matter what, but he could not stay as there was a chance of him becoming Chelsea’s boss.
Sampaoli added that even though he had other options, Chelsea’s owner and Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich approached him and told him he was high on the list – but he wasn’t eventually picked.
Instead, the Russian chose former Juventus manager Antonio Conte to replace Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho as the club’s manager.
Jorge went on to Spain to join Sevilla last June, and the Spanish club are now sitting at the fourth position in the La Liga table with just few games left to play.
