Five-time European champions Liverpool have been handed a big boost in the chase of Lyon midfielder Nabil Fekir following the news that the player is unwilling to extend his current contract at the French club.
Fekir, 25, has 18 months left on his Lyon contract which runs until the end of the 2019/20 season and club president Jean-Michel Aulas is keen to hand him fresh terms.
Lyon president Aulas wants to give him a new contract to drive up his transfer fee potentially.
The player is rated at around £58.5m at the moment and the transfer fee is expected to go down as he nears the end of his contract without any sign of renewal in sight.
Liverpool are long-term admirers of the French international forward who was part of the team that won the World Cup tournament in Russia this summer.
He came close to joining the Reds during this summer’s transfer window but the transfer didn’t take place.
Liverpool had already agreed on a £53m transfer fee for him only for the Reds to pull out of the transfer due to concerns over his knee.
Apart from the Reds, other European clubs like Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Chelsea are also in the running to sign the Frenchman.
