CARRAGHER reckons Pep is probably already thinking about next season.
Following their 2-0 win over Bournemouth last night, Manchester City eventually moved up to second on the Premier League table and are now eight points adrift of league leaders Chelsea.
And well, Carragher can’t see them bridging that gap between now and when the season ends in May, but instead thinks they will be more focused on putting a good run together ahead of mounting a serious title challenge next season.
It was said that Pep Guardiola is set to overhaul his Manchester City squad this summer with a large spending spree.
The former Liverpool player when asked if Guardiola men can still catch the Chelsea this season told told Sky Sports:
“When Pep Guardiola’s asked that question, he doesn’t really want to talk about it because he is so pleased with how his team is performing, just thinking there is a big gap there but we don’t need to concentrate on that.
“He will be thinking we just need to keep winning games and see how close we can get.”
Jamie said though eight points is a good gap, until they get to within four or five points then we should start to ask some serious questions.
“It’s still a massive ask but I totally get why Guardiola’s not getting involved in that kind of talk because he’s just pleased his team are playing well and winning games.”
He felt if Chelsea should do something ‘stupid’, that is down to them. But Pep is now putting things in place, maybe even more for next season. “And they are sure getting confidence and belief looking forward to next season.” he concluded.
However, Jamie Redknapp on the other hand thinks Lucas Leiva was Liverpool’s unsung hero against Spurs
Following Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Tottenham on Sunday, Jamie Redknapp singles out Lucas Leiva for special praise.
Redknapp thinks that Lucas Leiva deserves special praise for his performance for Liverpool in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
Sadio Mane grabbed the headlines as his two quick-fire goals earned Liverpool the three points at Anfield as Klopp’s men finally notched up their first PL win of 2017.
Klopp deployed Lucas to centre-back and the Samba star did not disappoint as he helped to keep the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli at bay on Merseyside.
Redknapp chose to single him out for special praise in the wake of Liverpool’s victory over the Lilywhites.
Redknapp writing in his column for The Daily Mail said though Sadio Mane will win the plaudits for his goals against Tottenham, Lucas actually deserves a special mention for his performance at the centre back of the defence.
“I expected him to be in for a torrid afternoon up against Harry Kane and Dele Alli but Lucas kept the in-form Tottenham pair at bay. He defended like a warrior. Lucas may not be the biggest player but he is so wily, knowing when to nudge his opponent and put them off balance.
“The Brazilian has had to suffer plenty of questions about his ability since arriving at Anfield in 2007 but more often than not he is Mr Dependable when called upon — be it in defence or midfield.”
He concluded that with the duo of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip missing games through injury this season, Lucas is proving that he can still be an important part of Klopp’s side.
Liverpool are aiming to finish this season among the top four after their eighth-placed finish last season.
